Create a React 18 App using Parcel 2

It’s been a while since I discovered Parcel, and I never had any occasion to try it with some experiments. I thought that today was the day, and my first impressions were wonderful. Today I want to guide you in building a simple React app using this bundler.

What is Parcel?

Well, Parcel is a zero-configuration bundler for Javascript & CSS. The cool thing about it is that if you don’t need extra stuff, it does not require any configuration for real, it works even without a configuration file.

Let’s create our App.

Usually, if you work with React, you probably did this at least one time in your life

npx create-react-app my-app

This is the common process of creating a working react application without effort using CRA (and webpack under the hood). Well, with parcel our magic app will be created from an empty folder, so create a brand new folder called react-parcel and initialize a new npm project:

cd react-parcel && npm init -y

Once the project is initialized, we need to install our bundler (Parcel) and our library (React) to make the things work:

npm i -D parcel
npm i react react-dom

And that’s all for the dependencies!

Now let’s create our src folder which will include all the app components and inside of it the entry points for HTML and Javascript:

mkdir src && cd src
touch index.html index.js

Let’s populate our index.html with some basic data:

Along with the basic tags, we have created a div with the common app id which will be used as the entry point for the react root, and we also added a module script that will contain the react initialization.

Now it’s time for our javascript! Let’s open the index.js and put the following code:

The code is pretty easy, simply we use our app div as a container for the react root, and we will render our app component inside.

Let’s now make a folder for our components and let’s create our App component:

Now our app is ready to be tested, to set up the node scripts for dev and prod, all we need to do is add the following to our package.json:

Let me explain what we just did:

The source key is used by Parcel to determine where the entry-point is, the start and the build are simply the invocation of Parcel with the live-server for start and with the production build for build.

The prebuild is inserted because for every build Parcel will not clean the dist folder by default, so we need to make it by ourselves. Pay attention if you have windows you should use rimraf - npm

It’s time to launch the Rocket! 🚀

npm start

And look at your brand new react app built with zero configurations!

A Webpack Comparison

As you can see, using Parcel it’s very easy, the same thing done with webpack would require a configuration similar to this:

Instead with parcel you don’t even need to worry about the configuration, just run npm start and you’ll be able to see your app running in the browser.

Bonus Tip

Did you know that Parcel supports absolute imports? You can change your App component import like this:

import { App } from "/src/components/App";
